The Carlton is Wimbledon’s longest established amateur dramatic society, performing in local theatres such as the New Wimbledon Theatre. The Carlton is an amateur dramatic society in the true tradition of amateur theatre and we actively encourage you to join in whatever your background – no previous acting experience is necessary, and members come from all walks of life. We aim to offer a wide range of amateur theatre productions, from modern comedy and Shakespeare to showcases of members’ work and workshops, often led by professional actors and directors. The Carlton has been performing for more than 82 dramatic years, and we plan to keep on going strong!
We perform at least three plays at local theatres each year. We also hold an annual Carlton Review, composed of short plays, sketches or scenes. Members can try their hands at directing before taking on a full production, or try something experimental.
We aim to put on productions which give as many members as possible an opportunity to act, but if you don’t get a part we’ll have something else for you to get involved in running concurrently. Or maybe you would like to try the technical side of running an amateur dramatic production, such as lighting, stage management or props.
